Job Description & Qualifications

Job Summary

 

Research, design, develop, test, and/or evaluate network and other data communication systems. Formulate and apply mathematical models and other methods to develop and interpret information. Recommend options for network and data systems hardware and software.

 

Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities

  • Monitors network performance and resolves issues.
  • Identifies areas of operation that need upgraded equipment. Makes recommendations for upgrades.
  • Analyzes test data. Recommends hardware or software for purchasing. Visits vendors to learn about available products or services.
  • Evaluates interfaces between hardware/software and operational/performance requisitions.
  • Confers with data processing, systems developers, and operations/production staff on issues.
  • Conducts surveys to determine user needs.
  • Provides training and mentoring to Network Engineers.

Nature and Scope

  • Identifies key barriers/core problems and applies problem solving skills in order to deal creatively with complex situations. Troubleshoots and resolves complex problems. Makes decisions under conditions of uncertainty, sometimes with incomplete information, that produce effective end results.
  • Independently performs assignments with instruction limited to the results expected. Determines and develops an approach to solutions. Receives technical guidance only on unusual or complex problems or issues.
  • May oversee the completion of projects and assignments, including planning, assigning, monitoring and reviewing progress and accuracy of work, evaluating results, etc. Contributes to employees' professional development but does not have hiring or firing authority.

Work Environment

  • Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.
  • Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.
  • Typically requires overnight travel less than 10% of the time.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be eighteen years of age
  • Must pass the Drug Test
  • Must pass the Background Check
  • Must pass pre-employment tests if applicable

Education and Experience

  • Typically requires BS/BA in a related discipline. Generally 5-8 years of experience in a related field; certification is required in some areas OR MS/MA and generally 3-5 years of experience in a related field. Certification is required in some areas.

 

Preferred Qualifications & Job Specific Details

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years configuring and maintaining Layer 2/3 switches and routers
  • Strong knowledge of Wireless protocols and design – desire Aerohive experience
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and trouble isolation  
  • Hands-on experience with installation practices involving network servers, switches, routers, hubs, and other ancillary devices.
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology and computer science.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing internal customer and personal services.
  • Able to evaluate and implement security tools and methods regarding network security issues of intrusion management, information assurance, and firewalls.
